    In January 2022, the Hong Kong Government culled over 2,000 hamsters and small animals due to some of them being found to test positive and transmit Covid-19 to humans. The pandemic may have ended the lives of the horde of hamsters prematurely, but their memories live on in new mediums, through digital avatars where they live out their meta dreams.

     

    A dedicated tech team is minting 2,000 Hamsters on ETH with quirks and characters, and a corresponding token ecosystem to grow and proliferate across various chains and metaverses, giving them digital immortality in the Hamster Kingdom community.

     

    10% of proceeds for Hamster Kingdom NFTs will go to assist local Hong Kong pet shop owners, to help reimburse their economic losses. Hamster Kingdom NFT holders will also gain access to the community, metaverse events and Hong Kong branded swag.

    Pet shop owner Louis Yeung, who has been running Chinchilla & Pets Shop in North Point for 20 years, said he would lose at least HK$10,000 (US$1,285) as a result of the policy. He handed in all 22 hamsters he had on sale in his shop, while the store closure forced him to put on hold the sale of eight chinchillas. “I didn’t expect any financial compensation from the government, but the time and love involved in taking care of those hamsters are priceless to me,” he said.

    Hong Kong to cull nearly 2,000 hamsters over possible Covid link

    Hong Kong authorities have announced a drive to cull nearly 2,000 hamsters after 11 tested positive for coronavirus at a pet shop. Pet owners had to hand over hamsters they purchased in the last four weeks to be euthanised. The 11 hamsters that tested positive were imported from the Netherlands and sold at a local pet store called Little Boss, according to Bloomberg. An employee at the shop was infected with the Delta variant of the virus.
